Peace on the Prairie is 6 miles north and 1 mile east of Smith Center which makes it really close to the geographic center of the lower 48 states. I don't know if this fact has anything to do with the quality of game that is on this land. I do know that the two bucks that ran out in front of me the other day as I was looking the property over were pretty special. There is ample habitat here for all the upland birds in crop, grass, trees, and water. Pheasant and turkey are numerous, and wait until you see the picture the pair of quail allowed me to capture. No cattle have been in the pastures in at least that long so the prairie is rested and thriving with everything needed for quality hunting. A few little diversion dams on the fingers draining into the creek would most assuredly bring mallard, teal, and maybe a few wood ducks to frequent this great habitat.

One of the best perks to selling ranches and recreational real estate in Colorado is that we are never very far away from the variety of wildlife this great state has to offer.  This past weekend I was lucky enough to spend some time looking at property for sale in Northern Colorado between the Poudre River and the North Platte River.  Saturday morning I woke up to my dog barking at a beautiful black bear that had decided to cross the river and check out the camp fire we had from the night before.  After quickly getting the feeling of not being very welcome, the sow got back in the water and lumbered off in to the aspen grove from which she had first appeared.  That bear was just the first of many wildlife encounters the day would provide…

Still early in the morning, we loaded up the truck and headed over Cameron Pass, destination; the famous North Platte River for a day of secluded fly fishing.  On the way to the river, we saw three different groups of Mule Deer, each one with a trophy size buck standing tall.  Not long after I mentioned how I have yet to drive this road a not see a Shiras Moose this year, we came upon a huge cow Moose standing in the middle of the road.  Obviously in no hurry, it became apparent she was acting as a crossing guard for her new calf that was hiding in the willows below.  The pair finally crossed the road in front of us and gave us the green light to be on our way.  Just miles later came the highlight of the drive when we spotted FIVE Bull Moose lying in a wet meadow near the summit of the pass.  Normally a fairly solitary animal, the site of this group of bulls was as unique as it was beautiful and something I’ll never forget.

The remainder of the drive presented us with a herd of Elk, more Mule Deer, a group of Big Horn Sheep, and a lone Pronghorn Antelope.  Not a bad start to a day full of catching and releasing plenty of hungry Brown and Rainbow Trout once we reached the state line hole of the North Platte.  It was just one of those days that made me so thankful to live and work in such a beautiful and unique part of the world!  Regardless of where you live now, it’s not too late to come out and grab a hold of your own piece of Colorado’s many farms, ranches and recreational real estate that we have for sale.  Don’t worry, we really don’t mind traveling the state to find you your own piece of Colorado paradise ;)
